Mom-Sense: It's Like Spidey-Sense But.. For Moms.

You all know that I mean when I say "spidey-sense," right? I'm referring to Spiderman's 6th sense, the one that he was granted after being bitten by that radioactive spider. It typically implies his ability to sense something being wrong, suspicious or dangerous.

Well, in case you were curious, Mom's have that sense too. I like to refer to it as Mom-sense.

Unfortunately, however, I don't believe I was granted this Mom-sense immediately after giving birth. Back then, I'm fairly certain I had no idea what I was doing. However, this sense of mine has been cultivated and honed over the last 19 months of my child's life.

My Mom-Sense usually kicks in as soon as I recognize that creepy silence that typically occurs at least once a day in our household. I know you Moms know that exact silence I'm talking about.

The lack of Toddler Wildebeest Feet running amok on the wood floors. That sudden lack of Toddler Chatter. The calm before the storm, so to say, when your Mom Gut knows that The Toddler is doing something he knows he isn't allowed to do.

Most recently, my Mom-sense perked up when I caught The Toddler sitting in the middle of the dining room table brandishing a pair of craft scissors that I'm pretty sure I left out of his reach, you know, when he's standing on the floor where he belongs

My Mom-sense also kicked in that time that I caught him precariously perched a top the back of the accent chair in our living room, pointing to the canvases hanging above his head exclaiming, "Baby! Baby!"

Just this morning my Mom-Sense radar went wild when I found The Toddler standing in the middle of the family room dumping his Apple-Berry juice box all over the beige colored rug. Why was he doing this? Oh, only because Curious George had ended and he absolutely detests when "the real children" come on in between episodes to say, teach him something.

Where am I during each of these escapades, you ask? Oh, you know. I'm usually just in the next room over or in the bathroom for what truly must only be .7 seconds trying to pee with a little privacy.

So, what has your Mom-Sense led you to find? Please share. I know I'm not in this one alone, Mamas!

Happy Friday, Loyals! Have a great weekend

  1. I'm right there with you! Once I hear that eerie silence I know my daughter is up to no good. Her favorite things to touch that she KNOWS she should are the dogs water bowl... dumped all over her and the kitchen floor, unplugging the tv and toilet paper... Fun times!

  2. I've found Katherine IN our front-loading washing machine and on top of the dining room table. Also? Throwing the fake ficus grass in the air like confetti...that thing is BALD now!

Only once had she completely emptied her diaper can. I call that a win!

  3. I can totally relate! I have caught my 19 month old standing on the center of the train table, the kitchen table and the back of the sofa :)

  4. oh girlfriend! i have found KP eating dog food one too many times, dumping out colored chalk on the whiteish carpet in the playroom, or dumping an entire jumbo sized bottle of baby oil on our BRAND NEW shag carpet.

  5. Well since C and K are cut from similar clothes and all- peeing without locking her in the BR with me is the only option after I too only took 5 seconds to pee and girlfriend was dancing on the kitchen table!! Ahhh! Let's not forget her ability to open markers very well and that may be why our downstairs was repainted last summer! And I don't know about C but K has a distinct look on her face the second she knows she did something wrong...now if only time out would work...

  6. I found H outside once when I tried to pee in peace!

He has unrolled all the toilet paper and gotten into the baby powder...is it scary that nothing he does really shocks me anymore?

  7. You nailed it with this post. I feel like that especially today and seriously it's only 7:15am in St. Louie . I found MK on the kitchen table with paint ALL over the table her hair and legs... Thinking how the hell did she get this out of the cabinet that's VERY out of reach?? Turn around and theres a chair pulled up to the cabinet. Seriously how are these kids so smart and quick??? The joys or a momma and especially the SAHM's that never get a break! TGIF !!!

  9. Crayons!!! Why do I let Carsyn have them? She has colored the walls, and furniture, and floor....

She finds them and runs out of my sight...followed by quiet, then giggles.

  10. Standing on top of our kitchen table, drinking out of our cat's water bowl, eating cat treats, standing on the back of our couch (also pointing to baby, mama, and dada in the canvases above) and my fave? Connor moved a chair to his window one day, climbed up on the window sill, latched on to the curtains, and slid down them! REPEATEDLY. I may or may not have busted out the video camera because it was HILARIOUS! :)

I have learned to just 'go with it,' as I'm sure you have too! :)

  11. New follower :)!
I agree! Mom-sense definitely comes with territory. Wen you hear quiet, you shouls immediately worry! Recently, she decided that her cloth diapers look better on the floor, Couch, and you know, to cuddle with! Ew! They are so quick though!

  12. Ummm yeah, mine recently lead me to find my Toddler running through our garage in his jammies running towards our ride-on lawnmower shouting "tractor! tractor!" He can't turn it on, but it was scary to learn he can turn a door knob now and disappear into the garage. He wasn't there too long though, thankfully!

  13. Mia is actually pretty good, with the exception of the random removal of all toilet paper from the roll in the bathroom, but just yesterday she went into my closet and put on some of my socks and underwear.

Guess it's time to potty train if she's that excited about Mommy's panties :)

  14. Mine was when my now-crawling little one was silent, licking an outlet: http://livinglikethekings.com/2011/12/my-parenting-fail-the-outlet-edition/

  15. My worst mom-sense find?

Hearing a chattering Kate go silent on the monitor after a nap. I hoped it meant she went back to sleep. But yeah, it really meant, "I'm angry you didn't come get me 0.2 seconds after I woke up so I am going to take all of my clothes off, including my diaper, and get pee everywhere."

    Sigh.

  16. These comments are cracking me up! Thatcher's fave is to empty the tampons from under the sink but honestly it keeps him quiet so I go with it.

  17. I'm there too!! On top of the tables is the big one for sure, always sitting cross legged very gentlemenly like.

By they way, when C is not eating your meals is he throwing them? That's our current daily (3x daily) struggle. Advice?

  18. When my son was about 2 there was silence and then a big splash! He dumped a whole bottle of strawberry sunny-d all over the carpet but on the good side we replaced the carpet with wood floors. Ya know for that next spill bc there will always be something spilled when you have little ones!!!

  19. We're visiting my parents right now and this morning my Grandma stopped by. We were sitting in the living room chatting when my mom sense kicked into gear and told me to go check out what the little was doing. She had found a glass of water on my night stand and you know, helped herself. AKA poured the entire thing over her head and down her body. Outfit change #3 for the day....

It also kicks it into gear every time she unloads the entire container of wipes to "keen baby" or gives her Anne Geddes creepy porcupine baby a bath in the toilet. Both of which happened yestesrday, I might add.

  20. Yet again I'm terrified by what I have to look forward to. We have a light right above our table. I'm guessing we are going to have to do something about that before the kid starts hanging from it!

  21. Ah yes, that ominous silence where you know he's watching milk drip from his cup onto the couch.

  22. I can totally relate! Just when I'm sure I have put something far out of his reach my child somehow figures out a way to get his hands on it!

  23. This was awesome. I can relate, which terrifies me to no end as to the many days ahead of us still.
I have caught Kal eating dog food, throwing paci's, books, toys, & lovies IN the toilet, and just yesterday, girlfriend crawled from our bed to my dresser and was sitting on it. Just as I was hanging clothes in the closet not even a foot away. Scared me to death! I will be shocked if I dont have gray hairs as well (loved that post by the way:)!

  24. Ohmg! Sticking her hands in the toilet is her new fave. Thankfully we always flush...ok maybe there was one time....Ahhhh!

  25. Hahaha!! I guess I have this to look forward to!! I have a bit of Mom-Sense with my little girl but I'm sure it'll develop into the full-fledged variety soon enough!!

  26. Connor tells on himself... score one for Mom! If he is doing something he shouldn't, he proclaims, "No, No, No!"
