The past few days, all I could think about is sex. No, not that I want to have it (much to my husband's dismay, it's the last thing I want to have) but that I've been dying to write a painfully truthful post about the "S" game from my perspective as an exhausted Toddler Mom and pregnant wife. Unfortunately, there are a few people in my life who read this here little blog that I wouldn't quite want to share those details with. So? Until I find my cajones and finish that post, I'm going to write about... second pregnancies. And just how much fun it is to be pregnant while chasing around a Crazy Wildebeest Toddler-Man.
When I was pregnant with C, I was working full-time as an outpatient chemotherapy nurse up until I was six months pregnant. There were days when I would curl up in a chemo chair during my lunch break and close my eyes for forty minutes. A welcome, welcome rest when The Pregnant Exhaustion would hit. Around 6 months pregnant, we made The Move to Maryland and I hung my RN hat in the back of my closet.
Although I was no longer working full-time, I was ridiculously busy. Packing homes, painting rooms, planning nurseries and figuring out how to live this new life in Maryland. Although at times it felt like I hadn't any energy left to breathe, I will never forget the almost-daily 2-3hr naps that Sheepie and I would take on the couch. It was glorious.
On the days when even the simplest of tasks would make me dry-heave? I didn't do them. I slept-in, ate candy for lunch, decorated our new home and made feeble attempts to have dinner ready for The Husband at the end of the day. When a craving would hit for a milkshake and fries at 11am? Off I'd go in search of the nearest McDonald's.
Fast forward almost 2 years. Here I am with a 17 month old Evil Knievel who doesn't stop for a second between the hours of 7am and 8:30pm. There are no naps. On the rare occasion that he naps? I write. I edit. Or I clean. Usually it's more of the former and much less of the latter.
Did you know Toddlers need to eat, like ALL THE TIME? Yeah. They do. And so that gag-feeling that I've got going all day long? Well, that doesn't go away when I'm fixing apple and cinnamon oatmeal or cheesy eggs. And let's not talk about the smell of microwaving a hot dog. I can practically feel the bile rising in my throat.
And C's new favorite game? Horsey. As in, when I'm laying on the floor, face down trying to close my eyes for a hot minute, within seconds I feel a 30lb monster climbing into my back for a "ride." Because that doesn't make me want to vomit all over the playroom carpet..
Do you think I could hire someone to change diapers for me? You know, just between the hours of 7am and 7pm? Because when those cheesy eggs and hot dogs come out the other end? It is not pretty.
Let's just say that walking the dog and picking up after Sheepie has left me dry-heaving on the neighbor's lawn a few times. I can't even begin to explain how horrendous diaper changes can be. If it wasn't for the fact that my child poops at least 4 times a day, I would leave them all for The Husband.
Second pregnancies and Toddler-Mom'ing are no joke.
When those cravings hit at 11am? It takes forever to corral The Toddler, pack the diaper bag, secure the iPad and load him into the car. By then, I've usually forgotten my wallet, lost the keys or a completely new craving has blindsided me so that I don't even want to leave the house anymore.
By the end of the day, I've waved the white flag more than once. My eyes have glassed over and I don't want to talk to anyone let along sing another verse of The Itsy Bitsy Spider. As for the "S" game? HA. Fat freaking chance.

Thankfully, C and I have discovered the wondrous powers of Curious George which allow for a small reprieve in the middle of the day when I'm teetering on the edge of a small mental breakdown.
And Loyals? Don't remind me. I'm only 17 weeks pregnant. We have a long road ahead and clearly, many, many more episodes of Curious George to watch. Toddler Mom'ing and Second Pregnancies are not for the weak.
Happy Wednesday!
So glad I'm not the only one totally beat by toddler mom'ing and being pregnant. It is down right exhausting.
ReplyDeleteI would love to read the post about the "S" game, but also completely understand why you don't post it...hence the reason why I don't blog to my full capacity - ever. I need a non family blog.
ReplyDeleteI am hoping to be in your shoes (2 under 2)...I think the only difference for us is that I have to work so I will get some reprieve from said toddler when I go to work. I'm so excited to be following you on yet another baby journey!!
It is a bit rough at first...but it does get better. When Colson was first born it was hard hsving two very dependent children--Hannah was only 2 years and 3 months old, not potty trained and very clingy. But As time went on it got better. We potty trained Hannah and she would actually help with her little brother or at least occupy herself while I was able to take care of things. It is much better and quite a bit easier now! Hang in there!
ReplyDeleteGirlfriend- I feel your pain! That was me when I was pregnant with K! At least C can walk around a bit and wear himself out- Jules didn't walk til 17 months do every time I bent down to pick her up- holy hurlage! Sending hugs and prayers that C realizes that sometimes mama needs to just chill and watch MMCH all day :) xoxoxo
ReplyDeleteI always wondered how moms of toddlers did it being pregnant...I think you've probably explained it perfectly! I couldn't imagine going through all the things I did with pregnancy AND raise a toddler! You're a great woman AND mama! We are hoping to try for #2 once our Annie Louise turns 2...no matter what age, I think it's difficult, and I salute ALL you mamas that do it! Hang in there!
ReplyDeleteYeah we are going to TTC #2 as of next month...pretty much exactly a month away! Whenever it is that we do get pregnant, I am a mess of excitement and nerves already. I was soooooo tired with my first pregnancy, and now I have an almost 2 year old who is VERY busy to chase after! I'll take it as it comes, but it's definitely going to be a new experience. I don't blame you for your apprehension about talking about 'S' on the blog...I can't do it either! ;)
ReplyDeleteI can ONLY imagine how you are feeling!! I had morning (all day) sickness while pregant with Olivia and it was AWFUL!! I work ft and spend 7.5 hours a week driving back and forth to work from home. I would have to get up at the crack of dawn (or so it felt) and then by the time I got home I was so exhausted I couldn't even think about making dinner let alone eating! I can only imagine adding a dog, a toddler, their food and diapers! Oh My Goodness! I hope you feel better soon!! Thank goodness for George! :)
ReplyDeleteThe smell of a microwaving hot dog makes the bile rise to MY throat!
ReplyDeleteYou're awesome, and I don't know how you do it! But I need you to write it all down for me so I can just look at your instructions when it's my turn, kay?
Hang in there! Mommying while being exhausted is painstaking I know. I can't imagine not having nap times. I'd be cray, cray for sure!
ReplyDeleteOy, I'm praying for you my friend. It was hard enough getting through my first trimester without a toddler! I can only imagine how difficult it is!
ReplyDeleteI'm so relieved I'm not the only one getting my butt kicked. I'm doing the very best I can, but having a toddler and being pregnant is hard! I've been feeling guilty that C is watching too much Yo Gabba Gabba but I need that time to relax or I'll go crazy. I so miss those long naps when I was pregnant the first time. They were amazing!
ReplyDeleteGod bless you. I can't even imagine. But...from here, it looks like you're a wonderful mother! And wife! And, you pretty well manage to have your stuff together! I don't know how you do it. SAHM is a tough job!
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to the *S* post...I have a feeling all of us toddler mothers, pregnant or not, are in the same boat!
Ah! We are 'discussing' 2 under 2. I would love to do it but many factors are up in the debate.
ReplyDeleteNot to mention....the "S" game is hard with one said toddler who doesnt sleep! So we should probably figure that one out first :)
Oh and the toddler eating. Insane. I dont know how K can eat so much. Girlfriend knows how to put some food away!
I died laughing about the Horsey game. Oh C! You poor thing!
Ill have to try Curious George...Mickey mouse clubhouse isnt doing it anymore...!
Wow - this sounds extraordinarily tough. Remind me to enjoy the hell out of my first pregnancy.
ReplyDeleteYou are one tough cookie! Hang in there. :)
ReplyDeleteRight there with you. And you can sure bet there isn't a whole lot of the "s" business in our house. There is usually a choice after P goes to sleep. Get more sleep my self...clean up a mess. Move a load of laundry through. Or have sex. 80% of the time I choose sleep :-)20% of the time i choose one of the others.....
ReplyDeleteFeel better! I remember the naps I took while pregnant with Tommy...was mortified because I never napped. And I get it when it comes to trying to do anything with a toddler who rarely naps. Except I'm not pregnant and dry heaving...so I can't relate there!
ReplyDeleteOh, our Thomas the Tank Engine DVDs are my best friend! At least I can get a couple emails answered and finish my eggs that way!
ReplyDeleteYour posts always make me laugh! Hope it gets easier :)
ReplyDeleteHang in there Momma! Just focus on all of your blessings and your need for skittles.
ReplyDeleteAt least there's a great reaward at the end! Posts like this do make me grateful for working believe it or not. It's nice to have a break from the chasing and cleaning and all that jazz! Would love to read about the dirty S word - ha ha!
ReplyDeleteHang in there. That's all I'm going to say. No sugar coating today... I'm sure you don't want to hear it :)
ReplyDeleteI'm still stuck on the fact that C poops 4 times a day. Ha! G goes once and I have been gagging every. single. time. I am SO exhausted this time around from the crazy, never stop for a second toddler...and I still have 29 weeks left. oy.
ReplyDeleteThis post reminds me of a post I wrote while pregnant.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.mythreebittles.com/2011/10/joys-of-pregnancy.html
the JOYS of pregnancy.
I feel your pain on everything in this post. :/
So this is a topic that I kinda can't get out of my mind lately. However, mine is because I have a 6 week old and Hub and I have always talked about having our kids close together...but now that I am taking care of a newborn, I can't imagine doing that AND having a toddler to chase around! But now I am thinking about being pregnant and chasing a toddler--yikes! More power to ya sister!
ReplyDeleteI don't envy you. Sorry that you still want to dry heave at certain things. The only thing that did that to me all the way through my pregnancy was cigarette smoke. At what age did C stop napping? I'm not looking forward to the day my twins quite napping at all.
ReplyDeleteOh and no wine...you forgot to mention that, that's critical.
ReplyDeleteAnd what's with the pooping 4 times a day? My daughter is the same way. I sometimes wonder how long is an acceptable amount of time to leave it.
The husband will be home in 5, 10, or 45 minutes, right?
I am not a parent so can only imagine what all this entails... but this was a riot! Had me chortling to myself at work for sure!
ReplyDeleteI am so with you. This shizz is the real deal.
ReplyDeleteThis is something I'm seriously having to think about. We are planning round 2 and the thought chasing 2 toddlers while preggers scares me a wee bit.
ReplyDeleteGirl, you are super mom.
ReplyDeleteRecently found your Blog, and I am loving it! I am also a SAHM with a 19 month old boy and 3 month old little girl. I totally get your post today, made me laugh out loud! You write extremely well, looking forward to reading your archives!
ReplyDeleteOMG, I so feel your pain. Except my little is only 11 months old, so she's crawling everywhere right now. But still needs to eat round the clock and poop like it's her full-time job. Hang in there, somebody told me I'll miss these days...ha!
ReplyDeleteHang in there love, I'm sure you'll rock the ToddlerMan/Baby Mama-ing. :)
ReplyDeleteOhhhh, just wait umtil the second gets here :) I would sit down to nurse and immediately hear "I need a snack." Those words were like nails on the chalkboard. But lets look on the bright side....you have a doctor's note saying no "s!"
ReplyDeleteBless your heart. These are the things I fear about pregnancy #2! I hope things get easier. :)
ReplyDeleteBless your heart! I have been wondering about you with Evil Kanevil and how that was going!! I wonder all the time with peens what I would do if I were pregnant , mostly because he weighs over 33 lbs and when I am carrying him up the stairs, I think how impossible that would be when pregs! You are almost half way to the finish line though and thats awesome!!
ReplyDeleteIt could be difficult specially if it's your first pregnancy. I myself never thought I could make it, but my daughter came out healthy and now she's very bright she's into toddler gymnastics
